German Pork Knuckle @ Quan Villa Restaurant, Sitiawan

*NON HALAL*

I was in Sitiawan again for work a few months ago. Since my client knew about my blog, they brought me to different restaurants. This was a lunch, a stone away from the Lumut port.

lala

We started with la la with cucumber soup at RM 10.

fried oyster

Then the usual fried oyster omelette at RM 12. Sitiawan's version used more eggs than starch, different than the ones we have here in KL. Both have their own individual taste, I loved both.

potato leaf

Potato Leaf with garlic was next at RM 12. Slightly wet, but the vege was fresh. This was decent.

taufu

Dry butter beancurd was a first one to me at RM 12. Normally, we had dry butter prawns, fish or mantis prawns, but for butter beancurd it was something unique. I loved this one, though it was slightly oily.

thai style

Thai style fish was priced at RM 42. Deeply flavoured in thai sauce, the fish was never lack of freshness. Sauce was thick and wasn't that spicy. I loved this.

pork

Many Chinese restaurants offered German style pork knuckle (RM 35), but having a good one will be tough. The skin was crispy and the meat was tender. I loved this as well.

It was a heavy lunch. The food in general was good, rich in flavour so the taste was slightly strong. Place is well air conditioned but place is a common stand alone (house type) restaurant, nothing fancy. The price was reasonable to me and I thought this was a good find!

Recommendable!

Salted Egg Mantis Prawn @ Hailam Village Seafood, Sitiawan (April '09)

I'm going to be very busy in the upcoming this few weeks with work. I try to blog regularly like usual.

This year alone, I went to Sitiawan 3 times for work. I' went to a few restaurants there which I blogged about it few months back. Yet, I missed a few which includes this lovely lunch at Hailam Village Seafood.

hailam

The location of this restaurant is on the junction of Sitiawan and Lumut Port, map is below.

calamri

We ordered the fried calamari. Crispy and not too soft. Fried foods hardly goes wrong right? This was decent.

mix vege

The mixed vegetables was next. Nothing amazing about it, this was average.

beancurd

Special cooked beancurd came with a generous amount of sauce. Personally, I kinda like this one.

promphet

It has been a while since I had a steamed promphet. The well steamed fish and topped with fried garlic and sliced ginger goes very well with sauce. This was good. That's why the dish came with 2 fish.

venison

There were Venison! Well, we ordered the black pepper venison. This was gooood! Meat was tender and the black pepper sauce blended well with the meat.

mantis

Lastly, we had the salted egg mantis prawn. Deep fried and coated with salted egg, this was good (without thinking the calories of it). Crispy on the outside, the meat was still tender.

To have a heavy lunch like this will result a lazy afternoon. The entire day after the meal became a lazy affair.

I would say they served decent food in general. The restaurant was packed during lunch time and it was an evidence for their popularity in the area. The bill was quickly paid off by my clients. I was told the price was very reasonable.

Dry Curry Noodle @ Kedai Kopi Woh Heng, Ipoh

The common thing to do when a restaurant is packed, you will go to the next restaurant. Since we couldn't eat at Foh San for dim sum, we proceed to a restaurant opposite Foh San, Kedai Kopi Woh Heng. We also met a tour guide outside of Foh San, who recommend us the dry curry noodle at Kedai Kopi Woh Heng.

woh1

Conveniently, we went to Kedai Kopi Woh Heng located just opposite of the road of Foh San.

woh2

We ordered the dry curry noodle as recommended by the tour guide. The noodle came late and the servings were inconsistent. One bowl came with mint leaves while one came without. Another one bowl missed the entire dry curry paste. Moreover, the dry curry noodle was ordinary. Nothing to shout about. We were a bit disappointed.

woh3

However, the white coffee was good. I guess that was the consolation we had. Thick and rich in flavour, the white coffee was the best thing we had for the morning trip to Ipoh.

Packed @ Restoran Foh San, Ipoh

Restoran Foh San is a very popular dim sum restaurant in Ipoh. Trust me the initial plan was to go there at 6.30 am. However, me and Rachel overslept and Steph called me at 6 am and we were like shit! We were still sleeping! It never intentional to be late, trust me on that!

We reached Ipoh around 9 am and we started to look for the restaurant without any maps or address. By 9.30 am we reached the restaurant by asking around and a friendly motorist who guided us there.

When we reached there we got a rude shock!

foh1

It was packed! Sandwiched until outside!

foh2

Basically there's someone standing at every table waiting for their turn. Estimated time to get a seat, say at least 1 1/2 hour?

We gave up! No Foh San dim sum this time around. But one thing for sure, I'll be BACK!

Maybe better luck next time....

The Amazing Capri Restaurant @ Lumut, Perak (March 09)

On the fourth day, we went to Lumut town for lunch. Since we tried Rockafella, we decided to try on the famous Capri Restaurant.

capri1

Lumut town is actually quite small. Locating Capri restaurant is never been easier. Its just a few turns from the Lumut jetty.

Its a cozy restaurant. There was quite a big crowd during lunch time when we were there. We also saw a few ship captains enjoying their lunch there.

capri2

The pizza came first. The Quattro Stagioni Pizza. It comes in 4 different types of flavours. The thin crusted pizza consists of beef salami, olive, mushroom and capsicum. The pizza was pretty good. Much better than usual pizza outlets, that's for sure. This is recommendable.

capri3

Chicken bratwurst was next. It was pretty good even though they used chicken instead of beef or pork. The mushroom sauce was a little bit "stingy" though.

Bratwurst was a new word to me so I "wikipedia" it.

A bratwurst is a sausage composed of pork, beef, or veal. The name is German, derived from Old High German brätwurst, from brät-, which is finely chopped meat and -wurst, or sausage.Bratwurst are usually grilled and sometimes cooked in broth or beer.- Wikipedia

capri4

Chicken lasagna was next. Layered and topped with cream and cheese. Lasagna is always one of my favourite dish. I always craved about it. Even though it looks simple, but getting a nice lasagna is always hard. Here, the lasagna might not look that good, but the taste was not bad.

capri5

My client ordered the ravioli. To be frank, I seldom had ravioli in my life. I tried to cook it once when I was in Australia. It didn't turn out the way it suppose to be. It was a totally blunder.

Anyways, we were really spoiled by the ravioli here. Goodness, me the thick creamy sauce with herbs was really addictive. It goes really well with the ravioli.

Ravioli is a type of filled pasta composed of a filling sealed between two layers of thin pasta dough. The word ravioli is reminiscent of the Italian verb ravvolgere ("to wrap"), though the two words are not etymologically connected.-Wikipedia

capri6

The apple crumble was promised to be nice by the lovely waitress. She wasn't lying. The apple crumble was hot while topped with the cold vanilla ice cream. The combination made a great dessert. This was really good.

capri7

The New York Cheesecake. It was a creamy cheesecake on a cookie crust topped with the whipped cream. This combination of high calorie content was another great recommendation.

The cheese cake was good....

capri8

The big fat lunch ended with the Movenpick Swiss Chocolate ice cream. The taste was heavenly. Smooth but thick in chocolate taste. Its was amazing. This premium ice cream is always recommendable.

The lunch feast billed up to RM 18x.xx for 4 persons. The service there was good. For the food, in general they were pretty good. Its kind of hard to believe there's a nice restaurant like this in Lumut.

This place is a must go if you are in Lumut.

Thai Taste Restaurant @ Damai Laut Golf and Country Club, Lumut (March 09)

For the third night in Setiawan, our client decided to bring us to a Thai restaurant at Damai Laut Golf and Country Club. It is located beside Swiss Garden, Lumut.

To go there from Setiawan, it took us at least half an hour drive. We drove slowly there and we enjoyed the lovely plantations view during the journey.

When we reached the restaurant, we were greeted by Thai waitresses and the other lovely friendly staffs. Parking was not an issue there. The restaurant is inside the club house itself. The place is well maintained, very clean with a very nice view of the golf course. It is well air conditioned.

They had an on going promotion for the dinner. We ordered a set dinner for RM 250.00 nett.

thai1

The first dish was the deep fried prawn cake. The crispy prawn cake goes very well with the sweet sauce. A great starter for the night.

thai2

The seafood Tom Yam soup was next. The soup was not too spicy and not too sour. It was just nice.

thai3

Next, the grilled chicken salad. Well, its more like a stir fried chicken with salad. The taste was decent. Nothing special.

thai4

Sweet and sour chicken was next. I loved how the chicken blended well with sweet and sour sauce. Chicken was deep fried and then stir fried with the sweet and sour sauce. This was pretty good.

thai5

Fried beef with fresh chili. The sauce once again was nice. Thick and savoury. The beef was tender even though its fully cooked. Decent.

thai6

Looks like its not going to stop. Red curry prawn was next. The reddish coloured curry itself was thick and had a good aroma of coconut milk.

thai7

The fried mixed vegetables was overcooked! The blunder of the night.

thai8

Lastly, we had the lovely water chestnut. Thick, creamy and sweet. This was good. Addictively sinful!

Overall, the food was generally okay. The set meal was RM 250 nett for 10 person. The location is a bit far off the town, driving there at night would be a bit hard. It was quite dark out there.

Western Food @ Rockafellas Cafe, Lumut (March 09)

On the second night of the work, we decided to be a bit adventurous. Instead of dining in Setiawan, we drove further to Lumut town for dinner.

Recommended by my client, this place is called Rockafellas Cafe (not related to the Rockafellas of US). Apparently, this place is very famous for its simple western cuisine.

The journey itself took around 1/2 an hour. After a few turns, we finally located the restaurant in Lumut town.

The place itself was very cozy. Nice enough, they had a pool table in the cafe. The friendly waiter came and took our orders. We were really hungry.

rock1

We ordered a sauteed mushroom. It was good. The creamy butter garlic sauce goes very well with the mushroom. A real good starter! To be frank this mouthwatering dish was very addictive! The sauce was thick, flavourly with butter, garlic and hints of herbs.

rock2

The caesar salad was next. The caesar salad didn't come with the egg. Missing eggs! One of the guys loved parmesan cheese so much, he basically "snowed" the caesar salad with the parmesan cheese. It was supposed to be a healthy food, now turned to a salad with cheese. The salad was decent.

rock3

I ordered a cordon bleu. Something that was not so in sync with my diet program. I felt guilty but the temptation was too much for me to handle.

A cut to the chicken, the ham was visible in the inside and the juicy melted cheese slowly flows out. A bite would taste the combinations of chicken with breadcrumbs, ham and melted cheese. It was delicious. Yet, it was sinful.

It was a fun night with lovely foods. I was a bit surprised as the place served decent foods with reasonable price. The service was good, but serving was a bit slow. They do spent a bit of time prepared their foods. The place is air conditioned and the music was nice.

Its a good place to dine if you are in Lumut.

Seafood @ Ah Pek Lee Kou Hock Seafood, Setiawan (March 09)

* NON-HALAL

This will be a series of Setiawan and Lumut food sessions I had in late March. I was working in Lumut for 5 days and I visited a few restaurants there.

Finding a nice place to dine was not easy. There's so many seafood restaurants in Setiawan, which is the better ones?

So then, I asked a coffee shop owner near my hotel and he recommended us "Ah Pek". Which his proper directions, we managed to locate the place.

It was around 8 pm and we were the last customer. We spoke to the owner and he recommended a few dishes for us.

ap1

Firstly, the asam steamed fish. Before even I started to eat I realized the presentation of this food was so awful. Even though this is a Chinese restaurant in a town, I believed they could put just a little bit more of efforts on the presentation of the food. The asam style here was quite different than the ones we had in Kuala Lumpur. The sourish assam taste was strong but lacked of the spicyness. Only slight hints of chilli and lacked of general taste. However, credits to the freshness of the fish.

ap2

Fried Calamari was next. It wasn't that crispy. Taste was okay. But as usual, fried stuffs like this are usually snapped up fast.

ap3

The "kam heong" style crabs was a combination of meat crabs and flower crabs. The owner promised us that the flower crabs meat would be tender, he wasn't lying. The crab meat was fresh but the taste of "kam heong" was too strong. Too much curry powder taste and lacked of chili taste.

ap4

Another fried food, the fried oyster omelette. Probably the best dish of the night. I always loved fried oyster omelette. The taste was good, it was little bit crispy and it was addictive. Good one!

ap5

We also had "la la" in special soup. Yet, again the soup lacked of taste. It was quite plain. The la la was definitely overcooked. The la la meat was too stiff.

Maybe Setiawan folks loved their foods in plainer taste, or we from Kuala Lumpur just used to heavier taste foods. The bill came to around RM 3xx.xx. I figured it was a bit pricy. The food was just average. We were a bit disappointed.

Heineken: A Night In Rome In Ipoh

h2

Last fortnight I was at Heineken: A Night In Rome in Ipoh. It was a "wet" affair. Read more HERE.
