Ayam Penyet @ Waroeng Penyet, The Curve

I heard quite a bit about this ayam penyet. In fact there's a time when I wanted to try it, they were closed. As time passed by, many good reviews were heard about them.

Few weeks, me and Jason decided to pay this Indonesian restaurant a visit.

Its located at the first floor near the bridge towards Ikano Power Center (Map below).

ayam1

I ordered the infamous ayam penyet for RM 7.90. The flattened fried chicken was quite tiny though. The chicken was crispy but dry. It came with sambal and something similar to fried beancurd. It goes well with the sambal, but I still find it a bit too dry.

ayam panggang

Jason ordered the ayam panggang (grilled chicken) for RM 7.90 also. Again chicken slightly small in size. The chicken is juicer than ayam penyet, thanks to the sweet black sauce. A little bit of lime juice will add more flavour to the grilled chicken. Better than ayam penyet.

In general, I find the portion is slightly small. Some might need to order side dishes to keep the tummy full. I would prefer the ayam panggang than the infamous ayam penyet. Yet, the price is slightly high for a piece of chicken.

Grilled Seafood @ Dewata Cafe, Jimbaran, BALI (March '09)

Jimbaran is a must place to go in Bali. Ask anyone that have been to Bali. Let me say it again Jimbaran is a must place to go in Bali.

Jimbaran lies on the 'neck' of the southern peninsula in Bali and is widely known for the fresh seafood kiosks that are scattered along the beach. Diners select the live seafood that they wish to eat, and it is immediately prepared, generally grilled over a fire of coconut husks rather than charcoal.- Wikipedia

Going to Jimbaran for sunset beach side dinner was our plan. It has one of the most romantic sunset view in Bali. Just imagine, me and Rachel sitting on the beach side, listening to live band overlooking the sunset and drinking the coconuts and having the amazing seafood. It's a moment in a lifetime.

BUT it DIDN'T happen!

Due to unforeseen planning error, we missed the sunset. We spent too much time at Ubud area so we didn't make it in time. Sigh.

We reached Jimbaran late. Yet, we still excited about the amazing seafood restaurants there. Our guide brought us to Dewata Cafe. It was one of the restaurants that streched along the beach.

Upon reaching, I wasted no time to look at their menu and their pricing. From there, I started something that I often do best, negotiating.

Tips here. I spoke with them in Malay language. Once they knew we are Malaysians, more discounts. They were reluctant at first to give me more discounts. I just told them that I was told they were the best restaurant in Jimbaran and they were "specifically" recommended by my friends. After listening to that. they straight away gave me more than 20% discount on foods. It was a white lie, but it worked! I left there with an evil smirking and my friends knew I had a great deal.

dew-fresh

Tiger (the guy in pink) then started to pick the foods for our dinner while the rest chilled at the beach side listening to live bands.

dew-grill

Looked at the charcoal! Burning hot!!

dew-squid

The grilled squid shrunk! LOL! Yet, it was good.

dew-prawn

I loved the grilled prawns. It was fantastic, grilled to perfection. The meat was fresh and tender. Must order the prawns if you are here. Fantastic!

dew-fish

The grilled fish was good as well.

dew-clamp

Well, lastly we had the grilled clamps.

dew-group

The group shot with the live band behind.

In general, the food was pretty good. I loved their grilled seafood. The seafood were pretty fresh and the service was good as well. Price for the whole dinner was around 650,000 RP. It was very reasonable. Yet, please do negotiate the price before you order. Sitting at the beach side was very relaxing and too bad we missed the ultimate sunset.

I would come back again for the food and the sunset.

B Couple Bar N' Grill @ Kuta, BALI (March '09)

Trust me on this, it was not my idea having Chinese food in Kuta, BALI.

We were lurking around Kuta area and browsed through a few restaurants. The majority wanted to eat Chinese foods. I just had to follow.

b1

We decided to dine at B Couple Bar. I had no idea its called B Couple Bar but this non-air conditioned place have a great live band there.

b2

We ordered quite a number of dishes, half roast duck, fried calamari, stir fried bak choy, sze chuan beans and tofu.

The food in general was decent. Service was okay and price was slightly pricey.

Beras Merah Waroeng & Bar @ Kuta, BALI (March '09)

My trip to BALI lately on March was memorable. Yet, I haven't really post everything here. BALI is a food haven. They have so many lovely foods there. Not to mention the amazing beaches and the amazing architecture designs there.

The time when I was in BALI, it was in the midst of "NYEPI" celebration.

Nyepi is a Balinese "Day of Silence" that falls on Bali's Lunar New Year (March 26, 2009). It is a day of silence, fasting, and meditation. The day following Nyepi is also celebrated as New year Gudi Padva in Maharashtra and Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka in India - Wikipedia.com

Give me some time, I will blog about the nyepi experience I had there.

On the nyepi's eve, most of the shops and restaurants were closed since noon. Only a few restaurants were left open to cater for tourists. Most of the locals went back home to prepare for the big celebration.

After going through a few restaurants at Kuta, we decided to dine in Beras Merah Waroeng & Bar.

br1

The place itself was really comfortable and cozy. The ambient was nice and they had a live band playing there.

We were sitting on a cushion type bench enjoying the music overlooked the crowded street of Kuta. Since it was just 2 of us, we ordered a rather simple dinner.

br2

We ordered ayam betutu (68,000 RP). The chicken was wrapped in banana leaves with the spices and cooked over a few hours to tenderize it. Some might said that this is a very traditional Balinese food. Anyhow, the taste was quite different, very new to me. Chicken was a bit soft, probably due to the long hours of cooking. Somehow, we don't really prefer it but its very subjective. This could be the best ayam betutu, and maybe we don't really know how to appreciate it.

br3

We ordered an additional gulai ikan (55,000 RP) to wrap up our dinner. Unlike ayam betutu, gulai ikan is available at most Malay stalls in Malaysia. This was the better dish.

The food was average, ambient was nice and price was slightly high. There could be a possibility that the chef were not around for Nyepi celebrations. Service was outstanding though.

Amazing "Bebek" @ Bebek Tepi Sawah Restaurant, Bali

* NON - HALAL

Well, the last few days in Bali was amazing. I will try to post as much as I could as I'll be out of town again for work.

Bebek in Indonesian means duck.

We were brought to this lovely restaurant by the friendly tour guide. We wanted to have "babi guling" at first but due to the festive season in Bali, most of the shops were not open.

To compensate it, the driver brought us for lovely crispy duck @ Bebek Tepi Sawah Restaurant.

bb1

The place was lovely ( will update more pictures in weeks time) .

bb2

Grilled Pork Ribs Tepi Sawah - 51,500 rp. exc tax

The grilled pork ribs was good. The ribs itself was tasty without the sambal. Meat was tender and it was not over-grill or too dry.

bb3

We also ordered mixed sate / satay. A combination of chicken, pork and beef. The satay was good, it can be eaten even without the satay sauce. The satay sauce was different. Peanuts were blended to paste and mixed with the satay sauce. There's no crunchiness in the paste. Its Balinese style I guess. - 52,500 rp exc. tax

bb4

The star of the day should be the Fried Crispy Bebek (Duck) Tepi Sawah - 61,000 rp. exc. tax.

I don't understand how could they fried a duck to such crispiness. Duck meat is always hard to cook. The duck was obviously a bit dry, but meat was good. It was like eating fried chicken. Blend it with the sauce, it will be tastier. A must try dish!

The food was good, price was reasonable and the service was good. There's no reason not trying this place for their famous "bebek".

Indonesian Food @ Bumbu Bali, Puchong

I had not tasted many Indonesian food in my life. However, this is the one to remember...

Located in Bandar Puteri Puchong, Bumbu Bali is a place that most people stayed around the area heard of...

Balinese deco...
Grilled chicken...
Nasi Campur (Mixed Rice) Bumbu Bali

Another type of chicken dish..

By looking back the pictures I took, it has already makes me hungry. The food was good and service there were not too bad either. A pax cost around RM 30 as we order extras.... I felt the price was reasonable being the portion given. I will definitely go again for the nasi campur, love it!
