Beras Merah Waroeng & Bar @ Kuta, BALI (March '09)

My trip to BALI lately on March was memorable. Yet, I haven't really post everything here. BALI is a food haven. They have so many lovely foods there. Not to mention the amazing beaches and the amazing architecture designs there.

The time when I was in BALI, it was in the midst of "NYEPI" celebration.

Nyepi is a Balinese "Day of Silence" that falls on Bali's Lunar New Year (March 26, 2009). It is a day of silence, fasting, and meditation. The day following Nyepi is also celebrated as New year Gudi Padva in Maharashtra and Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka in India - Wikipedia.com

Give me some time, I will blog about the nyepi experience I had there.

On the nyepi's eve, most of the shops and restaurants were closed since noon. Only a few restaurants were left open to cater for tourists. Most of the locals went back home to prepare for the big celebration.

After going through a few restaurants at Kuta, we decided to dine in Beras Merah Waroeng & Bar.

The place itself was really comfortable and cozy. The ambient was nice and they had a live band playing there.

We were sitting on a cushion type bench enjoying the music overlooked the crowded street of Kuta. Since it was just 2 of us, we ordered a rather simple dinner.

br2

We ordered ayam betutu (68,000 RP). The chicken was wrapped in banana leaves with the spices and cooked over a few hours to tenderize it. Some might said that this is a very traditional Balinese food. Anyhow, the taste was quite different, very new to me. Chicken was a bit soft, probably due to the long hours of cooking. Somehow, we don't really prefer it but its very subjective. This could be the best ayam betutu, and maybe we don't really know how to appreciate it.

We ordered an additional gulai ikan (55,000 RP) to wrap up our dinner. Unlike ayam betutu, gulai ikan is available at most Malay stalls in Malaysia. This was the better dish.

The food was average, ambient was nice and price was slightly high. There could be a possibility that the chef were not around for Nyepi celebrations. Service was outstanding though.
